Hyundai will use the name Ioniq as a separate brand name in the future, which will designate its electric cars.
Hyundai introduced the Ioniq in 2016, a portmanteau of the words “ion” and “unique.” The Ioniq was the first and only car in the world to offer three types of partially or fully electric powertrains – hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric – on the same platform.
The South Korean brand now saw the time to reposition the product and decided that the Ioniq name would in the future represent a separate model family: Hyundai's fully electric cars.
The first of the models to be launched under the Ioniq name will be a mid-size SUV: the Ioniq 5 will be launched in early 2021, based on the 45 Concept electric study car that debuted at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Ioniq 2022 sports sedan, based on the Hyundai Prophecy electric concept car unveiled in March this year, will arrive in 6, followed by the Ioniq 2023 large SUV in 7. The new brand's models will be built on Hyundai's electric global modular platform (E-GMP).
Hyundai Motor Group recently announced that it aims to sell one million pure electric vehicles at the group level by 2025 and become a leading player in the global EV market by achieving a 10 percent share.
