Everyone has dreamed of a car that looks completely ordinary on the outside and surprises something more serious at a red light or on the highway. The 80s-made FJ60, exhibited at the SEMA tuning show in Las Vegas, is perfect for this. Its new engine is more than two and a half times more powerful than the original, but this is not at all noticeable from the outside.

T Toyota will unveil the one-off Turbo Trail Cruiser at SEMA, November 4-7, 2025, combining the timeless appeal of the iconic 80s luxury SUV, the Land Cruiser FJ60, with the brutal power and fuel efficiency of the twin-turbocharged V6 i-FORCE engine found in today's Land Cruiser J300 and Tundra pickup.

With this unique project, Toyota has once again proven that sophisticated engineering can seamlessly retrofit a modern powertrain into an old vehicle platform. The spectacular restomod version is built entirely from Toyota parts and shows how today's powertrain technology can drastically transform the driving experience of legendary classics from old-fashioned to modern.

T The 3,4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 gasoline engine (V35A-FTS) in the Turbo Trail Cruiser delivers 394 horsepower and 649 Nm of torque, That’s almost two and a half times the 150 horsepower and 284 Nm of torque of the original FJ60’s four-liter inline-six engine. But the transformation isn’t just about raw power. The modern turbocharged engine delivers quieter operation, smoother ride, refinement, reduced emissions and fuel consumption. It combines all this with improved throttle response and the steep yet linear torque curve provided by twin turbocharging, making the Land Cruiser more capable than ever before for everyday use and off-road use.
“The Turbo Trail Cruiser shows what happens when we integrate Toyota’s modern powertrain technology into one of our most iconic classics” – he said Marty Schwerter, the chief operating officer of Toyota Motorsports Garage and the lead builder on the project.
“It’s a hot-rod approach with Toyota’s factory DNA – power, drivability and reliability in a package that remains true to the spirit of the original Land Cruiser.”
Unlike many restomod projects, the Turbo Trail Cruiser was built to look exactly as the donor car rolled off the factory floor in Japan in 1985. Every part was engineered to fit without modifying the firewall, relocating mounting points, or altering the structural integrity of the FJ60.
The Toyota Motorsports Garage team designed new engine mounts and created an adapter plate to fit the i-FORCE V6 engine into the bell housing of the FJ60's factory five-speed manual transmission.
The engine's oil pan has also been redesigned to match the old Land Cruiser's ladder frame design, and a unique stainless steel sports exhaust system provides an aggressive sound under acceleration. A new heat exchanger has also been installed in the original mounting points to provide greater cooling capacity for the twin-turbocharged V6, which is connected to the engine management system via a unique wiring harness, ensuring factory-level drivability.
In addition to the modern powertrain, the classic FJ60 gets a 3,81-inch lift, 35-inch off-road tires, and period-accurate paint and graphics, done in a PPG reproduction of Toyota's original 1986 Silver 147. The only updates to the five-passenger cabin are those that preserve its timeless vintage character while giving the impression that this SUV has spent the last 40 years in a garage, aging proudly yet remaining in pristine condition to this day.
“For Toyota fans, the Turbo Trail Cruiser is about more than just horsepower” – he said Mike Tripp, Toyota's vice president of marketing.

T“It was also important to preserve the character of a vehicle that fans still love today, while demonstrating how Toyota’s modern powertrain technology can seamlessly enhance the driving experience. This is a concept car, but it demonstrates the passion we share with our customers to keep these classics alive in new and exciting ways.” – he added.

The Turbo Trail Cruiser will be on display at the Toyota factory’s main stand at the 2025 SEMA show in Las Vegas in November. This build further demonstrates that internal combustion engines continue to play an important role in the Japanese automaker’s multi-modal strategy. Toyota remains committed to offering a full range of powertrain solutions – from traditional internal combustion engines to self-charging and plug-in hybrids, battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles – so customers can choose the one that best suits their needs.
