When Toyota unveiled the Scion 01 concept at the legendary SEMA Show, audiences saw not only a new off-road vehicle, but also the possibility of a long-forgotten name being resurrected. The Scion brand, which once symbolized Toyota's experimental workshop and youthful vigor, was now reborn.
The Scion story began in 2003, when Toyota realized that young Americans might want something different than what the boring Corolla or Camry offered them.

Scion became a brand of uniqueness, customization, and affordable style, with models like the xB and FR-S that boldly broke with the Japanese brand's more conservative image. Scion was Toyota's creative laboratory, where it could experiment with shape, color, and thinking. But the American market changed quickly, and after Scion had fulfilled its mission, it went out of business in 2016. Perhaps a little too soon.

Now, barely a decade later, Toyota sees the time to broaden its brand portfolio. The high-end and unique Century is leaving Japan and heading into key luxury markets, while the revival of the Scion name could bring the other extreme: a youthful, experimental direction.
The Scion 01 concept is a four-seat off-road buggy that resembles an off-road race car in many ways. Toyota's North American engineers created a concept specifically for off-road use, built for extreme conditions, but also with technological sophistication.

At the heart of the machine is Toyota's high-performance, turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, which produces more than 300 horsepower. This 2,4-liter engine comes from Toyota's North American truck division. The powertrain's special feature is the "Silent Mode," which allows for pure electric driving.

The Scion 01 concept is designed not only for speed, but also for versatility. It can race through desert dunes, its performance and demanding chassis make it suitable for off-road racing, and it's not afraid of technical rock climbing. The suspension travel is huge, the track is wide, and the car is compact enough to fit in tight spaces.

Although it is still just a concept, the designers have been thorough: safety and durability are guaranteed by an FIA-compliant roll cage, complemented by Toyota's own structural solutions. The drivetrain, suspension and braking system carry Toyota's off-road heritage and are built from components that have been tried and proven even in extreme conditions. The design is the work of the CALTY design studio in California: robust, futuristic, but elaborated in every detail, like the armor of a Japanese bushido warrior.
The Scion 01 was the centerpiece of Toyota's SEMA booth this year. We might see it off-roading in the American wilderness again.
